The President of the Republic of Srpska, Željka Cvijanović, attended today in Gradiška the ceremony marking the exodus of Serbs from Western Slavonia in 1995.

The President of the Republic of Srpska, Željka Cvijanović, and the Serb member and Chairman of the Presidency of BiH, Milorad Dodik, unveiled a memorial to soldiers and civilians killed in the Croatian criminal military and police operation “Flash” [Bljesak] in Western Slavonia on May 1 and 2, 1995.

The President of the Republic of Srpska said that the society has the duty of remembering all those who died in Western Slavonia as innocent victims of the Croatian military and police operation “Flash”, carried out 26 years ago with the genocidal intention of expelling all Serbs.

President Cvijanović noted that it is necessary to always keep in mind all Serbs from Western Slavonia who survived the criminal action of the Croatian forces, after which they spread out around the world, many of them finding new homes in the Republic of Srpska and Serbia.

“The monument we unveiled today should become a part of the complex that will be built and which will serve as a reminder of that hard suffering, but also be a warning for all future generations to take good care of their freedom and not be naive in their political decisions,” stressed President Cvijanović.

The President of the Republic emphasised that Serbs want to live in peace and freedom, and added that this objective would be unattainable in the region if there were not for the Republic of Srpska and her institutions.

“We must protect and keep the Republic of Srpska safe, strengthen the culture of remembrance, be aware of what happened in history and respect our victims, but also be prepared for any challenges that future might bring,” stated President Cvijanović.

According to Srpska’s President, the Republic of Srpska has withstood many challenges, economic, financial and political pressures applied by those who were supposed to live peacefully together with the Serbs, but also pressures coming from the international community.

The President of the Republic expressed her conviction that a better future, peace, freedom and development are ahead of Srpska.

The inscription on the monument erected in memory of soldiers and civilians killed in the Croatian criminal military and police operation “Flash” against Western Slavonia carried out on May 1 and 2, 1995 reads “The sprouts of Western Slavonia grow in the fields and heights of the Republic of Srpska. Life wins.”
