The President of the Republic of Srpska Željka Cvijanović attended tonight in Banja Luka the marking of the Serbian Unity, Freedom and the National Flag Day.

In an address at the ceremonial academy on the occasion of marking September 15 – the Serbian Unity, Freedom and the National Flag Day, the President of the Republic of Srpska said that since the beginning of the world, the history of all nations is interwoven with temptations, defeats, sufferings, but also victories and glorious moments.

“However, it seems to me that no nation’s historical destiny has intertwined the path of temptation and suffering with the path of victory and resurrection as much as our compatriots who carried Cer, Kolubara, the Albanian Golgotha, the blue tomb and the breakthrough of the Thessaloniki front”, said the President of the Republic.

The President of Srpska pointed out that the holiday, the Serbian Unity, Freedom and National Flag Day, is celebrated by the Republic of Srpska and Serbia for the second year in a row, to the honour of the Serbian army which exactly 103 years ago, together with allied forces, embarked on a decisive breakthrough of the Thessaloniki front with the aim to return occupied hearths and the final liberation of the homeland.

The President of the Republic of Srpska pointed out that the best evidence of dedication, heroism and superhuman deeds is the fact that the unstoppable victorious army, breaking the resistance of the enemy, covered more than six hundred kilometers in just 45 days.

The President of the Republic added that the Serbian tricolor flag was again flown in Belgrade, but also in Priština, Niš, Podgorica, Banja Luka, as well as in all other parts of the liberated country.

“These heroes liberated the homeland, and they left invaluable historical lessons for all of us. One of the most important lessons talks about unity”, it was added by the President of the Republic.

The President Cvijanović pointed out that numerous volunteers from Herzegovina, Krajina, Lika, Podrinje, Posavina fought side by side with compatriots from Šumadija, Pomoravlje, Raška, Kosovo and Metohija and other parts of Serbia, leaving all ideological, political, regional and other differences in the shadow of overall Serbian unity, the national flag and freedom.

The President of the Republic pointed out that for the Republic of Srpska, strengthening ties with Serbia, as well as improving cooperation, which is more intense today than ever before in the past, remain priority tasks.

The President Cvijanović said that today, when we talk about unity in Srpska, we do not imply single mindedness, nor one-sidedness, but gathering with the goal of protecting vital national interests.

“An important step in preserving our identity will be the adoption of the Law on the Protection, Preservation and Use of the Serbian Language and the Cyrillic Alphabet in the Assemblies of Serbia and the Republic of Srpska. Identity protection is our common interest and our inalienable right that we exercise without the intention of endangering or damaging anyone. On the contrary, we want peace, stability and prosperity, both for our citizens and for everyone else in the region”, it was emphasized by the President of the Republic.

The President of the Republic of Srpska added that regardless of the senseless obstructions from Sarajevo, the implementation of strategic projects will be continued, such as the construction of the airport in Trebinje, the hydroelectric power plant Buk Bijela, as well as the highway Banja Luka – Belgrade.

“And we will certainly never ask anyone in Sarajevo or anywhere in the world whether we will worthily mark the place of the most massive suffering of our people in history by building a sanctuary and a memorial centre in Donja Gradina!”, it was pointed out by the President of Srpska.

The President of the Republic stated that “it is our obligation to, appreciating what the past has taught us, work on behalf of the future”.

“That is why it is important to develop the Republic of Srpska and to preserve its stability”, added the President Cvijanović.

“May this holiday, now and in the future, be an occasion for us to celebrate freedom and proudly display our flag. May it remind us of the most glorious pages of our history, which we wrote as a nation when we were united. Long live the Republic of Srpska! Long live Serbia!”, it was concluded by the President of the Republic of Srpska.
