The President of the Republic of Srpska Željka Cvijanović attended today marking of the 25th anniversary of exodus of the Serbs from Western Slavonia in 1995.

The President of the Republic said that the unity of the Serb people has been an obligation, as well as showing respect for the victims so that similar suffering would not ever be repeated.

The President Cvijanović highlighted that marking important dates in history and showing respect for the victims and suffering of the Serb people were the responsibility of the authorities in Srpska and Serbia as well as those who received a large number of people leaving their homes in Croatia.

“By marking these dates together with these people, we show that we are open to them and that we are all one community that takes care that something like this never happens again”, it was stressed by the President Cvijanović.

The President of the Republic expressed gratitude to all those who showed how good they were 25 years ago by accepting the people who left Western Slavonia at that time.

“Our gathering today, in these emergency circumstances, is a proof that we are still together”, said the President Cvijanović.

The President of the Republic emphasized that, unfortunately, the Serbs have too many sad dates from the past and further history, including May 1, when more than 15,000 people were expelled from their centuries-old hearths from the Western Slavonia.

“They were expelled deprived of everything they had, from the place where they built their lives. An indication that there are even worse history pages than the terrible ones makes the fact that people who left their homes in just three days were then bombed in the columns. It shows the twilight of civilisation”, said the President Cvijanović, noting that there is no justification in any war or in any political process for such treatment of civilians leaving their lands.

“It is our obligation to stick together, to understand the process in which we live as well as the strength of how a nation defends itself, and that is togetherness, and we should bear in mind what are the main goals, political commitments and values of one people”, it was stated by the President of the Republic of Srpska.
